Technology Tips for Virtual Autism Testing

Setting Up for a Smooth, Accurate, and Stress-Free Evaluation

Virtual autism testing makes high-quality evaluations more accessible and convenient for families—but a strong technology setup is key to getting accurate results. At Access Autism Testing & Consultation (AATC), we help families in Texas, Florida, and Louisiana prepare for virtual assessments so the process feels calm, connected, and seamless.

Technology tips to help your child’s evaluation go smoothly

1. Use a Reliable Device (Preferably a Laptop or Desktop)

A stable device ensures we can clearly see and hear your child during interactive portions of the assessment.

  • Best choice: Laptop or desktop computer with a webcam.

  • Avoid: Cell phones or tablets unless no other device is available.

  • Tip: Test your camera and microphone before the appointment to ensure clear video and audio.

2. Check Your Internet Connection

A strong internet connection helps prevent lag, freezing, or dropped calls during key observation moments.

  • Recommended speed: At least 10 Mbps upload and 10 Mbps download.

  • Tip: Ask others in the home to pause streaming or gaming during the session for best performance.

  • Test your speed: Speedtest.net

3. Choose a Quiet, Well-Lit Space

Lighting and background can affect how accurately the clinician observes your child’s communication and play.

  • Lighting: Natural light or front-facing lamps are ideal. Avoid strong backlighting from windows.

  • Sound: Turn off TVs, music, and background noise.

  • Camera placement: Eye level is best so we can clearly see facial expressions and gestures.

4. Secure Your Virtual Testing Link Ahead of Time

You’ll receive a HIPAA-compliant telehealth link before your session.

  • Save the link in your calendar or email for easy access.

  • Test it early: Log in 5–10 minutes before your appointment to ensure it opens correctly.

  • Browser tip: Use Chrome or Safari for the most reliable experience.

5. Prepare Your Tech Backup Plan

Even with the best setup, tech issues can happen.

  • Backup device: Have a smartphone or tablet charged and ready as a secondary option.

  • Hotspot: If your Wi-Fi drops, consider switching to a hotspot connection.

  • Phone number: Keep your clinician’s contact number handy in case you need to reconnect.

6. Keep Materials Within Reach

Depending on your child’s age and the type of assessment, you may need simple household items (blocks, toys, or books).

  • We’ll send you a pre-session checklist so you can prepare materials ahead of time.

  • Tip: Keep items nearby but out of sight until your clinician asks for them.

7. Practice Before the Evaluation

If your child is new to video calls:

  • Let them say hello to family or friends over video to get used to looking at the camera.

  • Practice short “show and tell” moments to help them feel comfortable being observed.

8. Keep Charging Cables and Power Nearby

Virtual sessions can last 1–3 hours.

  • Plug in your laptop or tablet before starting.

  • If using Bluetooth headphones, make sure they’re fully charged.

9. Use Headphones if Needed

If there’s background noise, headphones can improve sound quality and help your child focus.

  • For young children, over-ear headphones are more comfortable than earbuds.

10. Do a Tech Check with Your Provider

At Access Autism Testing & Consultation (AATC), we’re happy to do a technology check before your scheduled appointment. This helps ensure:

  • Your device connects properly

  • Audio and video quality meet assessment standards

  • You feel confident using our telehealth platform
